Overview

Sam is a true Kansan on the surface but beneath it all struggles to fit the hometown mold. As she grapples with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders that don’t fit in but don’t give up, showing that finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Season overview

Season two reminds us that families are hard, even the fun ones. Sam and Joel have settled into a comfy routine. But nothing stays the same forever.

While he rents out his house, Joel and Sam revel in the highs of their temporary living situationship – and the lows of cleaning up after strangers. Meanwhile, as a newly single Tricia preps for an empty nest, Sam is overcome with unexpected emotion as she begins to clean out the barn.
At poker night, Fred throws Sam, Joel, and Tiffani a curveball. Meanwhile, Sam attends a former voice teacher’s concert in hopes of becoming her student again – with unforeseen consequences, and Tricia feels the effects of a small town filled with big talkers.
As Mary Jo’s behavior worsens, Sam and Tricia grapple with the difficult decision of escalating her care. Then, as Tricia pitches her services for Fred and Susan’s wedding, Joel has a crisis of faith, and Sam struggles to get back in touch with her instrument.
While on their way to Wichita, Sam and Tricia finally tell Mary Jo why they’re temporarily moving her from the care facility. After accidentally blowing his own cover stalking Brad, Joel opens up about his personal crisis stemming from Fred’s upcoming wedding.

When the devastation of her sister Holly’s death trickles into her workplace, Sam finds an unexpected connection with her coworker Joel. Later, just as a fight with her other sister Tricia leaves Sam feeling further unmoored, Joel offers her a lifeline.
Sam begins to bond with fellow members of Choir Practice, but her burgeoning friendship with Joel is threatened over competing outlooks on their future in Kansas. After a disappointing job review and a concerning visit to her parents’ house, an increasingly distraught Sam seeks help from someone close to Holly.
Sam and Joel embark on a covert mission to uncover the source of her brother-in-law Rick’s sudden windfall. Then, choir practice provides Sam with the courage and clarity to share mounting concerns about her mother Mary Jo with her father Ed.
After Pastor Deb asks for an impromptu meeting, Joel prepares for the worst, and promptly breaks out in a vicious neck rash. With money tight, Sam gets creative in sourcing a solution for the upcoming corn harvest, and later, confronts Rick.
With a tornado looming, Sam prepares for a different kind of storm as she shares the truth about Rick with Tricia. After impulsively adopting a dog, Joel realizes he wants more out of life.
After a surprising update concerning her recent job performance, Sam must evaluate her next step. Meanwhile, Tricia and Charity’s working relationship grows complicated, and a visit to Mary Jo in rehab brings some difficult family truths to light.
In her quest to reinspire Joel, Sam recruits a small team to help and reveals a new potential location for Choir Practice. Later, on a purple party bus, Sam realizes just how far she’s come. Season finale.
